Outboards

Outboard motors for Minecraft Bedrock and Java Edition. Clamp one onto a boat – or build a raft out of any blocks, put a motor or three on it, and take your house boat, your floating farm or your pirate ship out to sea.

Which one do I need? Playing on an iPad, iPhone, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or Minecraft for Windows? That is Bedrock Edition – take the first download. Playing on a computer with the Minecraft Java Edition launcher (Mac, Windows or Linux)? Take the Java download. Not sure? If you bought Minecraft in the App Store or Google Play, it is Bedrock.

Latest version: 0.1.0

Install

Install on iPad, phone, console or Windows (Bedrock)

  1. Download Outboards.mcaddon on your Windows PC, Android phone or tablet, or iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open the file. Minecraft starts and imports both packs.
  3. Create or edit a world. Under Behavior Packs, turn on Outboards. The resource pack is added automatically.
  4. Find the motors in the creative inventory, or craft them. Use one on a boat in the water, or on the side of a raft.

Running a server? Use the separate behavior pack and resource pack. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch can’t import add-ons from files, but you can join a world or Realm that has the add-on.

Install on Mac or PC (Java Edition)

  1. Install Fabric Loader for Minecraft 26.3.
  2. Download Outboards-fabric.jar, plus Fabric API and GeckoLib.
  3. Put all three files in your mods folder and start Minecraft with the Fabric profile.
  4. Find the motors in the Outboards creative tab, or craft them. Use one on a boat in the water, or on the side of a raft.

Upgrading to a new version

  1. Download the new version and open the file. A newer version replaces the one you have, and your worlds use it the next time you load them.
  2. Still running the old version? (or Minecraft says it is already installed): go to Settings → Storage, delete Outboards under both Resource Packs and Behavior Packs, then open the new file again.
  3. Check the world: in the world’s Edit screen, under Behavior Packs and Resource Packs, make sure Outboards is active. A world you imported or downloaded can carry its own old copy: deactivate it there, save, and activate the new one.

On a server, replace the add-on’s folders in behavior_packs and resource_packs with the new ones and restart it.

Delete the old Outboards jar from your mods folder and put the new one in its place. Keep only one version in the folder. If the new version needs a newer Fabric API or GeckoLib, update those too.

The motors

Four outboards, from a silent electric trolling motor to a 90 hp V4. Hover or tap a picture to see it on a boat.

Outboard Motor (2 hp)

A little two-stroke for a rowing boat or a small raft. It sips fuel: a lump of coal lasts two and a half minutes at full throttle.

Outboard Motor (15 hp)

A proper four-stroke. It makes a boat plane over the water, and it pushes a raft of a few dozen blocks at a good pace.

Outboard Motor (90 hp)

A big V4 for speed boats and big rafts. Very fast on a boat, and the one to fit to a raft of a hundred blocks or more. Thirsty: bring blaze rods.

Electric Trolling Motor

A quiet electric motor on a long shaft, charged with redstone. Slow but silent: fish and animals on the shore don’t hear you coming.

On a boat

  1. Put a boat in the water – any wood, or a bamboo raft (not one with a chest).
  2. Use a motor on it. The motor is clamped onto the stern, and the boat becomes a motorboat.
  3. Fill it up: right-click it with coal, charcoal or blaze rods – or redstone for the electric motor.
  4. Get in and press W. Sneak and right-click it with an empty hand to take the motor off again.

Build a raft

A raft is any blocks you like, joined together and floating on the water: planks, logs, a little house with a chest and a bed, a farm, a lighthouse. When it sets off, the whole thing goes with you.

  1. Build it on the water, with open water all round. Up to 256 blocks. It must not touch the shore or the bottom.
  2. Clamp a motor onto its side at the water line: use the motor on the side of a deck block, standing on the raft and looking back over the stern.
  3. Fill up the motor and right-click it to cast off. Put a ship’s wheel on the deck to steer from the wheel instead.
  4. More blocks, more motors. Every motor on the raft pushes. A raft of a hundred blocks wants a 90 hp, or two.

In Bedrock Edition the raft moves one block at a time and turns in quarter turns, holding A or D. In Java Edition it glides and turns smoothly, and is put back down as blocks, lined up with the world, when you stop.

More to know

Fuel

A full tank is 12 units. Coal and charcoal give 3, a blaze rod 6; the electric motor takes redstone (1) or a block of redstone (9). Bigger motors burn faster.

Big rafts, slow rafts

The heavier the raft, the slower it goes and turns. Several motors add up: put two or three on the stern of a big raft.

Everything comes along

Chests keep what is in them, and players and animals standing on the deck travel with the raft.

Bump

A raft stops when it hits the shore, a pier or another raft. Back off with S and steer round it.

Silent running

The electric trolling motor makes no noise: the one to take fishing, or hunting along the shore.

Breaking

Hit a motorboat a few times to get the boat and the motor back. Break a motor on a raft to get it back as an item.
